ACUPUNCTURE 101:  Inside of you is an intelligent, energetic system that maintains health and balance.

Like chiropractic, acupuncture is a non-drug, non-surgical approach to activating your body’s self healing abilities.
Through the equation E=MC2, Einstein showed us that everything is made of, and radiates energy.  This subtle form of energy supports, shapes and enlivens our physical body and activates our lives.

For the past 5000 years, practitioners of acupuncture have called this intelligent energy Qi (pronounced “chee”).

Qi is the vital energy in all living things, from the smallest tree to the smallest cell.  Qi provides the power to accomplish everyday activities. It is necessary for growth, development, movement, maintenance of body temperature, protection against illness and disease, and overall regulation of the body.  Our health is influenced by the quality, quantity and balance of Qi.

Qi flows through meridians, which are like highways of energy.  They are invisible highways, yet they energize, nourish and support every cell, tissue, muscle, organ and gland.

When Qi is balanced and flowing freely, the body’s natural self healing abilities are activated, enabling internal stability and lessening of dis-ease and symptoms.  A blockage in this flow is like having an accident on a highway—everything gets backed up and stops flowing.  Blockages can manifest into various signs and symptoms.  Similar to the causes of vertebral subluxations, physical, emotional and chemical stresses can cause blockages in meridians, as well as seasonal changes and the weather.  Over time, the body as a whole becomes weakened, making you susceptible to pain, disease and ill health.   The overall goal in acupuncture treatment is to restore energetic balance and proper energy flow to the meridians, thus allowing your body to function normally and return to health naturally.

At NCA we evaluate the 12 main meridians by using a computerized diagnostic test called "Acugraph Digital Meridian Imaging” system.  Using this system allows Dr. Nygren to measure and analyze the energy balance of each meridian, then make the best, most appropriate treatment plan for you.

During an acupuncture session at NCA you will be led to your choice of a warm or cool room where you will lay on your back, front or side, or sit in a reclining chair.  Next, Dr. Nygren will insert anywhere from 6 to 60 sterile, thin needles.  This might sound painful, but believe us, it is not!  Some needles stay very superficial to the skin, others go deep into the tissue.  Once they are all in you get to listen to calming music and relax for 15-30 minutes.  Many patients tend to take naps during this time.

As with chiropractic, the number of treatments vary with different conditions and individuals. Chronic problems and severe conditions tend to take more visits.  Researchers internationally agree that the usual number of treatments is between 6 and 16.  At NCA we take it 5 at a time.  At the 5th, 10th, and 15th visit we re-graph and re-evaluate your condition to see how you’re responding.

What to expect?
Everyone responds to treatment differently therefore, we cannot guarantee the outcome of treatment.

  •   Some individuals experience total or partial relief of their pain or symptoms after the first few treatments.
  •   Others notice steady, gradual improvement.
  •   In some cases, no relief is felt at all until several days go by.
  •   Occasionally, some people notice that their pain actually seems to be worse before it gets better.
  •   Let us know how you responded to the previous treatment at the time of your follow-up visits, so that your treatment plan can be adjusted accordingly.
